|Full Judicial Funding|
In 2010, Virginia imposed a freeze on the automatic replacement of every judge who retired, died or stepped down. Only the positions specifically funded in the state budget were filled. Funding has not kept pace with vacancies on the bench. The VBA has been a vocal proponent for the full funding and filling of all judicial vacancies in Virginia. We amplified our message by involving other statewide bar groups in a resolution stating the importance of a full judiciary to the economy as well as to citizens’ access to justice. An independent study of the current judicial caseload, ordered by the General Assembly, found a shortage of judges in all three levels of courts. The study recommended filling many vacant judgeships and creating several more positions.
