Free Legal Services Available to Victims of Virginia Tornados Lawyers from around the Commonwealth are offering free legal assistance to victims of tornados that caused extensive damage in southeast and central Virginia on April 28.Persons who suffered damage from the tornados can reach a volunteer attorney by calling the Virginia State Bar's Lawyer Referral Service (1-800-552-7977) on weekdays between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. The lawyers will provide advice about insurance issues, landlord-tenant problems, home repair contracts, home solicitation, lost legal documents and other legal problems resulting from the tornadoes. Of possible, victims should have on hand any legal documents -- for example, insurance policies, contracts, leases, mortgage papers, and Social Security numbers -- that relate to their questions. The Virginia Bar Association is a voluntary organization committed to serving the public and the legal profession by promoting the highest standards of integrity, professionalism and excellence; working to improve the law and the administration of justice; and advancing collegial relations among lawyers. The Virginia State Bar is a state agency that protects the public by educating and assisting lawyers to practice ethically and competently and by disciplining those who violate the Supreme Court's Rules of Professional Conduct, all at no cost to Virginia taxpayers. |
