Criminal Law Section
The Virginia Bar Association's Criminal Law Section, whose members include judges, prosecutors and defenders, monitors pending criminal legislation and recommends positions on that legislation to the VBA Executive Committee. From time to time, the Section initiates legislation.
The Section has sponsored Capital Defense Workshop, a two-day CLE event for capital defenders, each year since 1992. See the VBA Calendar for the date of the next Capital Defense Workshop, generally held in November. Pursuant to the Code of Virginia §19.2-163.8(A)(vii), attorneys representing defendants charged with capital murder or sentenced to death must attend at least six hours of specialized training in capital litigation and an additional four hours of forensic evidence training biennially. Attendance at the entire workshop satisfies this training requirement. It also provides an opportunity to hear leaders in the field of capital defense.
In addition, the Section usually presents a CLE program at either the Summer or Annual Meeting of the Association.
