The Virginia Bar Association holds two general, statewide meetings each year, one in the winter and one in summer. The 2014 winter meeting, called the Annual Meeting, will be held in collaboration with the Old Dominion Bar Association. The meeting provides legal professionals with educational programming and business networking opportunities. During this month’s meeting, VBA members will elect new officers and board representatives, and awards will be presented. The conference site is the Williamsburg Lodge and Conference Center, 310 S. England St., Williamsburg, VA 23185.
About the VBA Veterans Initiative Task Force This initiative to provide pro bono and reduced-fee legal services for Virginia veterans (www.vba.org/veterans) sprang out of a VBA meeting program in 2009. The program shined a light on the legal problems Virginians commonly face upon their return from overseas military duty. More than 850,000 veterans live in Virginia. Leading the VBA Veterans Issues Task Force are two West Point graduates and combat veterans Robert J. Barrett, an attorney with Degremont Technologies N.A. in Richmond, and Matt Kapinos, a lawyer with McGuireWoods LLP in Richmond. The initiative has attracted more than 250 lawyer volunteers and numerous requests for legal assistance from veterans and their families.
