The highlight of the Saturday night reception at the VBA Summer Meeting was the presentation of the LexisNexis award, given for extraordinary leadership and dedication to the legal profession and public service.
The 2014 recipient is George K. Martin of McGuireWoods in Richmond. He has been a member of the VBA since 1992.
VBA President John L. Walker III presented the award with this introduction:
"A graduate of the University of Virginia and Howard Law School, George is a highly skilled practitioner who specializes in construction and commercial real estate transactions and local government law.
"At McGuireWoods, George has been involved in numerous aspects of firm leadership for many years and currently serves as managing partner of the firm’s Richmond office. For 10 years, George served on the Virginia Board of Bar Examiners, and he has also served on the boards of James Madison University and the Regent University School of Law, and on the Governor’s Blue Ribbon Commission on Higher Education.
"In 2011, he was appointed to the Board of Visitors at the University of Virginia, and, in 2013, he began a two-year term as the Rector of U.Va.
"Clearly, throughout his career, George has exemplified both extraordinary leadership and public service.
"It is my privilege to present the 2014 LexisNexis award to George Martin of McGuireWoods."
