M. Steven Weaver and Glenn M. Hodge, both VBA members, will receive the Lewis F. Powell Jr. Pro Bono Award for their work starting and leading the Pro Bono Referral Program with the Harrisonburg-Rockingham Bar Association. The program has been in existence for 32 years, closed about 3,000 cases and clocked more than 23,000 hours of donated legal services.
They will share the award with Legal Information Network for Cancer, or LINC. The Richmond-based program helps cancer patients, survivors and their families with nonmedical needs.
The Lewis F. Powell Jr. Pro Bono Award was established by the Special Committee on Access to Legal Services of the Virginia State Bar. The honor recognizes attorneys and attorney groups for outstanding pro bono contributions. The awards will be presented Oct. 22.
According to the VSB, Weaver and Hodge were nominated by John E. Whitfield, executive director of Blue Ridge Legal Services Inc.
