A Guide to the Administration of Decedents' Estates in Virginia, 2015 editionSince 1996, The Virginia Bar Association has provided a handbook for Virginians who carry out some of the routine requirements of estate administration.

"A Guide to the Administration of Decedents' Estates in Virginia" is a public service that has gained the favor of clerks of court and commissioners of accounts in many localities. It also has been a popular reference book at public libraries across the commonwealth.

In August 2015, the VBA Wills, Trusts & Estates Section and its Legislative Committee released the fourth and newest edition of the handbook for the public. The easy-to-understand guide poses and answer questions related to several elements of this topic.

Chapters cover these subjects:

  • Funeral and burial arrangements; pre-qualification responsibilities of the executor,
  • Locating and reading the will,
  • Probate and qualification,
  • Notifying the beneficiaries,
  • Rights of the surviving spouse and children,
  • Paying debts and claims against the estate,
  • Paying taxes,
  • Responsibilities, powers, and rights of the personal representative,
  • Estates of decedents who die without a will,
  • Compensation and reimbursement of the personal representative, and
  • An estate administration checklist.
