Looking for a Bigger Role in the VBA?

The Governance Committee of the VBA Board of Governors is drafting a slate of nominees to fill upcoming vacancies on the board. An approved slate will be presented for election by VBA members Jan. 21, 2017, during the VBA Annual Meeting.

According to association bylaws, write-in nominations will be considered from members who express their interest in writing to Executive Director Yvonne McGhee at least 45 days before the Annual Meeting. That deadline is Dec. 6, 2016.

However, the bylaws also state that members must be invited to submit candidates “in time for responses to be considered by the Governance Committee.” The Governance Committee provides its proposed nominees for board consideration in advance of the fall Board of Governors meeting. That meeting occurs Oct. 21-22 in Abingdon.

The three-year terms of four Board of Governors members expire at the upcoming VBA Annual Meeting.

Grand Divisions of The Virginia Bar AssociationBoard vacancies will occur in the seats that represent the Tidewater and Blue Ridge regions, as well as two at-large positions. The Tidewater Region encompasses Judicial Circuits 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 7 and 8. The Blue Ridge Region covers Judicial Circuits 16, 20, 25 and 26. The board members whose three-year terms end in January are William A. Galanko of Norfolk; C.J. Steuart Thomas III of Staunton, who vacated his seat in 2016 to become board Chair; Michael HuYoung, at-large, and Mary Zinsner, at-large.

Additionally, one-year terms of the judicial, law school and legislative representatives will end at the Annual Meeting. Current representatives serving their second one-year terms are Judge Everett A. Martin Jr., Professor A. Benjamin Spencer and Del. G. Manoli Loupassi. These representatives are appointees of the Board of Governors.

The Governance Committee is appointed by the VBA president and serves to cultivate potential leadership for the VBA, promoting inclusion, diversity and geographic dispersion. The committee consists of the Immediate Past President Harry M. “Pete” Johnson III, who serves as its chair, President James Patrick Guy II, President-elect David S. Mercer, and the Chair of the Board of Governors, C.J. Steuart Thomas III, as well as at least two VBA members who do not serve on the Board of Governors.

Appointed committee members for 2016 are Past Presidents Thomas R. Bagby, Hugh M. Fain III and Lucia Anna “Pia” Trigiani; Immediate Past YLD Chair Nupur S. Bal; former board members Cyril F. Coombs, Mark L. Esposito, Donald C. Schultz and Eric J. Sorenson Jr.; past Judicial Representative the Honorable Jane Marum Roush; and members Helivi L. Holland and the Honorable John M. Tran. Yvonne McGhee serves as staff liaison.
