Memorial Service Oct. 21 for Past President John M. Ryan

John M Ryan 1988 VBA Journal Presidents photoLife Member John M. Ryan of Virginia Beach, who served as VBA president in the association’s centennial year – 1988 -- died Oct. 16. He was 81.

He had been a partner at Vandeventer Black LLP in Norfolk, and his practice focused primarily on labor and employment law, litigation and admiralty.

According to The Virginia Pilot and Legacy.com, a memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 21, in the Laskin Road Chapel of H.D. Oliver Funeral Apartments, 2002 Laskin Road, Virginia Beach, 23454. Online condolences can be sent to www.hdoliver.com.

The obituary states that Mr. Ryan “was grateful to God for a full life and the privilege of servicing the law” and that he treasured all his clients.

Mr. Ryan, who was born in 1936, earned a law degree from the University of Virginia School of Law in 1963. For 10 years he taught a seminar at the Marshall-Wythe School of Law at the College of William & Mary, and in 1975 he co-wrote the book “The Teenager and the Law” with a former superintendent of the Norfolk school system.

Mr. Ryan had been a member of the VBA since 1964.
