The Virginia Bar Association is one of eight signers of a letter to members of the General Assembly requesting funding for additional judges in the state's 2018-2020 budget.

"Our organizations represent thousands of attorneys across Virginia, and possess a long history of working collectively to advance the fair administration of justice in our Commonwealth," the letter states. The bar associations supporting this effort are the VBA, Virginia Trial Lawyers Association, Virginia Association of Defense Attorneys, Old Dominion Bar Association, Virginia Women Attorneys Association, Virginia Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers, the Hispanic Bar Association of Virginia and the Fairfax Bar Association.

The letter refers to a caseload study of judicial needs and its recommendation for 435 judges in Virginia. The state has authorized 429, but about 30 judges over the current judicial funding level. The study was conducted by the National Center for State Courts.

Individuals, families and businesses are directly harmed when their ability to resolve disputes in the courts is unreasonably delayed, the letter states.

"Less than 1% of the Commonwealth's budget is allocated to the operation of Virginia's judicial system," the letter states. "Please find the modest means to include the additional $7.9 million in funding in this budget to ensure that this critically important branch of government has the support it needs to achieve its mission for the people of the Commonwealth. It makes both economic and common sense to do so."
