With an upcoming vacancy on the U.S. District Court for the Western District of Virginia, U.S. Sens. Mark R. Warner and Timothy M. Kaine have asked statewide and specialty bars to evaluate candidates.

The VBA Committee on Federal Judgeships - Western District will evaluate candidates who submit their applications to the VBA.

The seat to be filled is that of Judge Glen E. Conrad, who will be retiring.

Candidates seeking the VBA's evaluation - no interviews are held - should forward the following materials electronically by Feb. 26, 2018, to VBA Executive Director Yvonne Cockram at ycockram@vba.org:

  1. A letter requesting the VBA's recommendation.
  2. A copy of his/her completed Virginia State Bar judicial questionnaire. [Downloadable Word document]
  3. A resume.
  4. One or more writing samples of judicial opinions, legal briefs or law review articles written by the candidate that the candidate believes will assist the committee's evaluation.
  5. Any other written materials the candidate believes will assist the committee.
  6. Any other materials the committee requests.

Applicants also are required to complete a questionnaire and submit it to the Virginia's U.S. senators by Feb. 26, 2018. The mandatory questionnaire can be found on Warner’s website.

U.S. district judges are appointed by the president. They undergo hearings before the Senate Judiciary Committee in advance of a full Senate vote on confirmation.
