About Wills for Heroes

Wills for Heroes is a national program that was developed in response to the events of September 11, 2001, when it was discovered that many first responders had no estate planning in place. In Virginia, Wills for Heroes is jointly sponsored by the Virginia State Bar Young Lawyers Conference and The Virginia Bar Association Young Lawyers Division.

The Wills for Heroes Program provides free basic estate planning documents (will, power of attorney, and advance medical directive) to first responders and their spouses, which are prepared by attorney volunteers using the “HotDocs” document assembly program.

The key to the success of Wills for Heroes is YOU, the volunteer!  NO ESTATE PLANNING EXPERIENCE IS NECESSARY.  All Virginia-licensed attorneys are encouraged to participate.  Also sought: volunteers to serve as notaries and witnesses (non-attorneys welcome).

Attorney volunteers will help first responders and their spouses on Saturday, May 18, between 8 a.m. and 8 p.m. at Tidewater Community College.

What Do You Need to Do to Volunteer?

Volunteers must first attend the Mandatory Volunteer Meeting, which includes an introduction to basic estate planning in Virginia, provides an overview of the Wills for Heroes program, explains the document templates, and discusses the logistics of the program. Pizza and beverages will be provided. MCLE credit (*approval pending) may also available to Virginia attorneys who volunteer on the Document Preparation and Execution Ceremonies Day.

Volunteers will sign up to participate for at least one 4-hour shift on the Document Preparation and Execution Ceremonies Day, May 18, 2019, between 8 a.m. and 8 p.m. at Tidewater Community College. Light refreshments will be provided to volunteers throughout the Document Preparation and Execution Ceremonies Day.

What First Responders Should Expect

The Virginia State Bar Young Lawyers Conference and The Virginia Bar Association Young Lawyers Division invite first responders of Hampton Roads to participate in Wills for Heroes, where local attorneys will provide for you, and your spouse if desired, FREE basic estate planning documents, to include a will, advance medical directive, and Power of Attorney. First responders eligible to participate in this program are Virginia residents who are sworn personnel of law enforcement, firefighters, and emergency medical technicians.

You MUST attend one of the following Informational Meetings to have your estate planning documents prepared. Spouses who wish to participate in the program must attend an Informational Meeting as well. You and your spouse do not have to attend the same Information Meeting.
