About Wills for Heroes

Wills for Heroes (WFH) is a national program developed following September 11, 2001, when it was discovered many first responders did not have any estate planning in place. The Program provides free basic estate planning documents (Wills, Powers of Attorney, and Advance Medical Directives) to first responders and their spouses prepared by volunteer attorneys.

NO ESTATE PLANNING EXPERIENCE NECESSARY!

All licensed Virginia attorneys are encouraged to participate. We are also seeking volunteers to serve as notaries and witnesses (non-attorneys welcome).

See the flyer.

What to Expect

Part I: CLE

Virginia-licensed attorneys must attend a mandatory Wills for Heroes CLE, which includes an introduction to basic estate planning in Virginia, provides an overview of the Wills for Heroes program, explains the document templates and software, and discusses the logistics of the program. Refreshments will be provided. CLE credit will be given to Virginia attorneys who volunteer for at least one shift during the Document Preparation and Execution Ceremony Days.  Those volunteering in the capacity of a notary or witness need not attend the Attorney CLE.

Dates:

October 24 (5:00 - 6:30 p.m.)

October 25 (11:00 a.m. - 12:30 p.m.)

RSVP for the CLE by October 15

Part II: Will Preparation

All volunteers must sign up to participate in at least one four and one-half (4.5) hour shift on one of the Document Preparation and Execution Ceremonies Days. Refreshments provided.

Dates:

October 28 (8:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m.)

October 29 (8:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m.)

RSVP for will preparation by October 15

This event is presented by the Virginia Bar Association Young Lawyers Division, The Virginia State Bar Young Lawyers Conference, and The Office of the Attorney General of Virginia.
