In conjunction with the VBA past presidents' gift of a plaque commemorating the founding of the VBA, here are some thoughts about the meaning of the VBA from Past Presidents Allen Goolsby (1991) and Ned Slaughter (1978):

1991 VBA President Allen Goolsby"When I think of the VBA two words come to mind: camaraderie and professionalism. Memories of so many good times shared with fellow lawyers from across the commonwealth coupled with the ability to act collaboratively to support the profession and the rule of law. Here’s hoping that in today’s rapidly changing, electronic world, young lawyers will have the foresight to take advantage of the opportunity."

-- Allen Goolsby

1978 VBA President Edward R. Ned Slaughter Jr."During my first 10 years of law practice in the 1960s, when I seemed to be in the office 24/7, I at least was able to form an opinion that the VBA was clearly the pre-eminent voluntary legal organization in the commonwealth with truly uncommon leadership. There were clearly giants in those days! The president in 1970-71 was E. Waller Dudley, and I made a trip to Alexandria to tell him I would like to be more involved in the association.

Space does not permit me to recite all the presidents and their accomplishments during the ensuing decade, but to note one president as an example, it is difficult not to choose the late Sen. William B. (Bill) Spong Jr. After his defeat for a second term in the U.S. States Senate - a tragedy for the nation - Bill, as dean, brought the William & Mary Law School to new heights, the National Center for State Courts to Williamsburg and set a standard as president of the VBA in 1976 to which all of us since that time have aspired. He was also one of the best examples of the association’s tradition of cordiality and friendship."

-- Edward R. "Ned" Slaughter Jr.
