VBA Plans Debate During Summer Meeting

The Virginia Bar Association expects to hold its traditional first-of-the-season public debate of candidates for statewide office at its 128th Summer Meeting in July. This year’s statewide race is for a U.S. Senate seat from Virginia.

“PBS NewsHour” Anchor and Managing Editor Judy Woodruff will moderate the planned debate on Saturday, July 21, from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at The Omni Homestead Resort in Hot Springs Virginia.

The candidate invitees will become clear June 12, primary day for Republicans and a state filing deadline for other hopefuls. Incumbent Sen. Tim Kaine, a Democrat, is running unopposed on that ticket for a second term in office, and no party primary will be held.

Under the debate policy of the VBA, invitees must be legally qualified and meet all requirements to be on the ballot. Additionally, the candidates must, at least 30 days before a scheduled debate, have demonstrated substantial voter interest and support in the sole and exclusive judgment of the VBA. In assessing significance, the VBA may consider the results of major, reliable, nonpartisan public opinion polls; news media coverage; and evidence of a significant and sustained level of financial support and receipt from a significant number of contributors. The full debate policy can be found online on the VBA website, vba.org.
