RICHMOND (June 14, 2018)--Attorney General Mark R. Herring announced today that 145 law firms, legal departments, government offices, and law schools across Virginia joined together to raise the equivalent of nearly 1.5 million pounds of food for Virginia's hungry during the 12th annual Legal Food Frenzy. This year's total is up 7.5% over 2017, and contributions bring the total raised during the annual drive to more than 17 million pounds over its twelve years.

“Over the past twelve years, the legal community and the Federation of Virginia Food Banks have partnered for this wonderful project and collected millions of pounds of food for families in need,” said Attorney General Herring. “Virginia’s food banks are on the front lines of the battle against hunger in our communities and I’m proud to stand with the legal community in support of their efforts.”

The Legal Food Frenzy, a collaboration between the Attorney General's office, the Young Lawyers Division of The Virginia Bar Association, and the Federation of Virginia Food Banks, pitted Virginia law firms and legal departments against each other in a friendly competition to raise food for food banks in their local communities.

This year, the firm of B. Cullen Gibson from Norfolk took overall first place by raising over 60,000 pounds per person, and, as a result, won the coveted Attorney General's Cup. The Office of the Attorney General retained its "Urbanna Oyster Award" as the top contributor in the Government and Public Sector category.

“The entire legal community, led by Attorney General Herring, has been one of our most reliable and consistent partners. We are incredibly grateful for their continued support and participation in the Legal Food Frenzy as we work collaboratively to end hunger in the Commonwealth,” said Eddie Oliver, Executive Director of the Federation of Virginia Food Banks, a partner state association of Feeding America. Last year, Federation members distributed 110 million pounds of food and grocery products to approximately 1 million individuals in need of emergency food assistance.

In addition to thanking the food drive coordinators and representatives across the state, Attorney General Herring offers a special thanks to Eddie Oliver and The Virginia Bar Association's Young Lawyers Division co-chairs Will Prince from ThompsonMcMullan, Chris Gill from Christian & Barton, Derek Swanson and Alex Cuff from McGuireWoods, Lauren Wheeling Waller from Williams Mullen, and Stacey Forbes from Reed Smith, for organizing the campaign.

Note: Pounds of food listed above are counted by food and cash donations. Cash donations are converted using the formula of $1 = 4 pounds of food. Rankings below also take bonus incentives, such as early registration, into account.
