The public is welcome to attend, at no cost, The Virginia Bar Association's eighth consecutive debate among U.S. Senate candidates from Virginia. Registration is required.

The 2018 debate, featuring incumbent Sen. Tim Kaine and challenger Corey Stewart, chairman of the Prince William County Board of Supervisors, begins at 11 a.m. Saturday, July 21, during the VBA's 128th Summer Meeting in Hot Springs, Virginia. Judy Woodruff of "PBS NewsHour" will moderate.

Online advanced registration is closed. The public can register in person the morning of the debate at the VBA Registration Desk in the Mt. Vernon Foyer of The Omni Homestead Resort after 8 a.m. Registrants will receive badges. See the map below for locations.

People who have already registered online should check in and pick up badges at the VBA Registration Desk in the Mt. Vernon Foyer of the hotel the morning of the debate. Please check any large items with you at the coat/bag check near the VBA Registration Desk. No large bags or backpacks will be permitted in the Grand Ballroom.

The Grand Ballroom is the site of the debate

Doors to the site of the debate, the Grand Ballroom, open at 10:30 a.m. The public entrances to the room will be marked with signs. Access to the debate hall is limited to registered attendees wearing VBA-provided badges.

A portion of the Grand Ballroom will be reserved for registered VBA meeting attendees until 10:50 a.m., which is 10 minutes after VBA meeting programming ends elsewhere in the conference center. At 10:50 a.m., all seating in the Grand Ballroom will be available to any badge-holder.

Because of high interest in the debate, the VBA has reserved the Theatre of the Homestead for audiences to view the proceedings via live stream. Seating in the Theatre, which also opens at 10:30 a.m., is first-come, first-served.

Debate rules

All public debate guests agree to follow the VBA debate rules.

  • No campaigning or campaign signs, banners, logos, stickers or other paraphernalia is permitted on hotel property.
  • No large bags or backpacks will be allowed in the Grand Ballroom. All items are subject to search before entry is permitted. Bags, coats and other items can be checked at bag check near the VBA Registration Desk.
  • No photography or audio or video recordings of the proceedings are permitted except by VBA staff, the VBA's conference audio-visual provider and registered news media.

Public parking information

The hotel will allow public parking for the debate at the Spa Parking Lot, near the Village of Hot Springs, at a surface lot in the village behind the Duck Inn and across from the BB&T, and in the valet lots, which are the first three paved roads to the right on Shady Lane, the first right when you turn off of U.S. 220 onto Park Lane toward hotel registration.
