The Joint ADR Committee of the VBA and Virginia State Bar presented its Second Annual ADR Symposium in Richmond on Sept. 24 at Troutman Sanders in Richmond. This year’s theme was ADR in the Workplace.

Attendees from across the state heard presentations from leading practitioners and thought leaders on Employer ADR programs, Mediating Employment Claims, and Ethical Issues in Mediation. They also heard a panel present on atypical ADR, where dispute resolution and consensus building techniques and resources were applied to diverse matters such as environmental cases, educational institutions, public policy and legislation, and matters of race, public spaces, and monuments.

Judge Wesley Russell of the Court of Appeals of Virginia updated attendees on the Appellate Mediation Project and the two-year pilot program that begins Jan. 1, 2019. (Basic mediation training and special appellate mediation instruction will be offered Nov. 14-16 at VBA on Main in Richmond.)

Lunch was included, and attendees and speakers enjoyed a reception after the conference.

Attendees received 5 MCLE Credits (1.5 Ethics) and 5.75 MCME Credits (.5 Ethics). The full agenda can be viewed online.

Special thanks goes out to all the speakers and sponsors, including gold sponsors Troutman Sanders, The McCammon Group and Vandeventer Black LLP. Special thanks as well go to the Special Committee on the Symposium: Jim Cosby, chair; Hon. Deborah Blevins, immediate past chair; Connell Mullins, vice chair; Claudia Farr, secretary/treasurer, and Council members Will Fitzhugh, Deborah Fitzgerald O’Connell and Renee Gilbert.
