Are you grateful for where you have landed and for those who helped you along the way? Are you interested in paying it forward in a way that has a real and positive impact on our community? Are you willing to commit to just three hours per month?

Beginning in January 2019, the Mentor Program-Capitol will kick off at Woodville Elementary School in Richmond. Many of Woodville’s students come from low-income housing developments, including Creighton Court, with higher than average rates of crime, poverty, and trauma. It is one of the lowest ranking elementary schools in Virginia.

The Mentor Program, a project of the VBA Young Lawyers Division and chaired by Will Van Thunen, will partner with Woodville for the 13th consecutive year. Volunteers in this project provide the students and members of this community with the information, skills and support they need to access positive and productive educational paths.

Mentors will have the opportunity to sit with students during their lunch period or resource period to speak with them about their lives and goals or to help with reading or other areas of need. This not only provides an excellent opportunity for one-to-one or small group mentorship, but it is also an immense help to Woodville’s teachers. Research shows that committed mentoring relationships can have a real positive impact in our communities.

The YLD Mentor Program-Capitol asks volunteers to commit to attend at least two mentoring sessions per month during the academic year (but, of course, certainly encourages more). Arrangements also can be made for mentors to work in pairs. Making and keeping your commitment to your mentee are keys to the success of this relationship.

The Mentor Program, one of several activities and projects of the Young Lawyers Division, is open to all attorneys and staff members of firms associated with the VBA as well as students attending Virginia-based law schools.

To sign up to become part of the mentor team starting in January, please contact Anna Page ( or Will Van Thunen ( as soon as possible, but no later than Dec. 21, 2018.
