Stress, anxiety and depression are endemic within the legal profession.

#RUWell? pin designThe VBA Public Service Committee launched its duty to care initiative at the 129th VBA Annual Meeting with the invitation for lawyers to ask their colleagues #RUWell?

Members of the committee passed out lapel pins as a reminder and an informal pledge to care for yourself and other practicing attorneys and those aspiring to join the profession.

Some examples of the scope of issues facing attorneys and students:

  • 28 percent of lawyers experience some level of depression.
  • 36 percent of lawyers qualify as problem drinkers.
  • 11 percent of lawyers experience suicidal thoughts.
  • 14 percent of law students experience severe anxiety.

"Our duty to care for each other is a moral and ethical mandate," reads an informational card to which the pins were attached. "We cannot adequately serve the public without caring for our own. Join our efforts to address the many dangers to lawyer wellness by reaching out to your peers and asking: 'Are you well?'"

The VBA Public Service Committee plans to sponsor presentations, workshops and CLEs this year to assist lawyers in identifying issues and providing solutions and resources to improve lawyer wellness.
