“When I think about what makes a great leader, I think of someone who leaves an organization stronger than it was after his term of office ends,” Stockment said in the presentation. “A great leader inspires others and establishes or reinforces systems to ensure the long-term health and success of an organization.”

Mauler began his leadership in the YLD as a development editor for the Opening Statement newsletter before rising to editor-in-chief. Under his leadership, the quarterly newsletter consistently won the ABA YLD Award of Achievement in the Newsletter category. He also expanded the size of its editorial board, developed talent by requiring each member of the editorial board to be responsible for one issue and established a system for generating content.

He also served on the YLD Executive Board for three years and has twice served on the YLD Nominations Committee. Mauler is employed with the U.S. Department of Justice in Washington, D.C. He is aging out of the YLD.
