VBA President Richard E. Garriott Jr. released this statement about Friday's events in Virginia Beach:

2019 President Richard Garriot Jr."As many of you know, I am a lifelong resident of Virginia Beach. No words can describe the horror and heartbreak of the tragedy that occurred in my hometown Friday afternoon. As a member of a city board, I spent many hours in that very building and know many people who worked there. Several members of my family knew and worked closely with several victims of Friday’s shooting. The false hope that “this can’t happen here” came crashing down around us last week.

"As president of The Virginia Bar Association, a focus of my term is on civility in an increasingly uncivil atmosphere. We don’t yet know what spawned the violence, but the tragedy in my hometown reinforces my call for our organization to get people to stop speaking past one another and start speaking to one another to resolve conflict and improve civil discourse.

"We took a step in that direction as an organization at the VBA winter meeting with the program 'Reuniting America: Can We Be Part of the Answer?' I encourage all lawyers to download the thought-provoking presentation in podcast or video -- for free -- along with the written materials. Find them at vba.org/reuniting-america-video and vba.org/reuniting-america-pdf.

"We will probably never know why the suspect needlessly took so many lives, but if we can encourage those around us to communicate with one another, perhaps we can avoid another catastrophe."
