VBA Installs Alison M. McKee As 132nd President

Virginia Beach-based lawyer among several taking leadership roles in statewide voluntary bar organization

The Virginia Bar Association installed Alison M. McKee as its 2020 president Saturday, Jan. 25, in Williamsburg. She focuses her practice on banking and finance, commercial real estate and senior housing matters at Kaufman & Canoles, P.C., in Virginia Beach.

The oath of office for McKee was administered by her husband, VBA member and Kaufman & Canoles attorney T. Braxton McKee.

"Our principal focus in 2020 will be to begin to implement specific action items” on the strategic plan the Board of Governors developed last year, the VBA’s 132nd president told members and guests at the Annual Meeting of the VBA in the Williamsburg Lodge. “Those goals are centered on this association’s tradition of excellence and include our desire to further professional excellence in Virginia and to continue promoting the Rule of Law.”

The VBA will attract new members representing all segments of Virginia lawyers and develop leaders who serve the legal profession and the public. In addition, the VBA will maintain its highly regarded, non-partisan legislative advocacy program.

“We have a great association,” McKee said. “We do a lot and we do it well, in keeping with our high standard of excellence. … With your help, we are going to have another great year.”

Additional 2020 Leaders

In addition to McKee and Garriott, two other members also begin one-year terms as VBA officers. Elected to leadership roles were:

  • Richard H. Ottinger of Vandeventer Black LLP in Norfolk as president-elect, and
  • Victor O. Cardwell of Woods Rogers PLC in Roanoke as chair of the Board of Governors.

These officers and the leader of the Young Lawyers Division, or YLD, make up the voting members of the VBA Executive Committee. The YLD is a group of about 1,200 attorney members age 40 or younger or otherwise new to legal practice. The YLD members elected a new chair for a one-year term. She is:

  • Madelaine A. Kramer, counsel with Sands Anderson PC in McLean.

2020 VBA President Alison M. McKeeAlison M. McKee, president of the VBA, has been an active VBA member since 1984. She was chair of the Young Lawyers Division in 1993. More recently, she co-chaired the VBA Business Law Section’s Third-Party Legal Opinions Report Committee and served as vice chair of the VBA Business Law Section. McKee has served on the VBA Board of Governors since 2016. She is a graduate of Boston College and the University of Virginia School of Law.

2020 VBA President-elect Richard H. OttingerRichard H. Ottinger, president-elect of the VBA, concentrates his Norfolk practice in commercial litigation. A partner with Vandeventer Black LLP, he is co-chair of the firm’s government relations committee. He joined the VBA in 1997 and has led the VBA Civil Litigation Section and the VBA Transportation Section. In 2006, he accepted the Sandra P. Thompson Award for long-term service to the VBA Young Lawyers Division. A graduate of Boston University, he earned a J.D. from the William & Mary Law School.

Victor O. Cardwell, 2020 VBA Chair of the Board of GovernorsVictor O. Cardwell, chair of the VBA Board of Governors, practices labor and employment law and is co-chair of Wood Rogers’ labor and employment law section. He also is chairman of the firm’s board of directors. Cardwell joined the VBA in 1991 and is a member of the VBA Labor and Employment Law Section and the Law Practice Management Division Council. He also serves on the Virginia State Bar’s Board of Governors for its Diversity Conference. He graduated from the University of Virginia and Washington and Lee University School of Law.

Richard E. Garriott Jr., 2020 VBA immediate past presidentRichard E. Garriott Jr., immediate past president of the VBA, handles family law and civil matters at Pender & Coward, PC, in Virginia Beach. A VBA member since 1997, he joined the Board of Governors in 2015. He is board liaison to the Virginia Family Law Coalition and the VBA Commission on the Needs of Children. Previous, he was vice chair of the VBA Domestic Relations Section. He is a Fellow in the American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers and Virginia Law Foundation. He earned a master’s degree from Ball State University, and undergraduate and law degrees from the University of Richmond.

2020 YLD Chair Madelaine A. KramerMadelaine A. Kramer, the YLD chair, is a civil litigation attorney at Sands Anderson PC in the Washington, D.C., area. A member of the VBA since 2012, last year she was chair-elect on the YLD Executive Board as well as chair of the Law School Councils. Formerly she chaired the Law School Council for the University of Richmond and was secretary/treasurer of the YLD. She graduated from Bryant University, and earned an MBA from the University of Miami and a J.D. from the University of Richmond School of Law.

 

The membership also welcomed eight new members to the VBA Board of Governors at the Annual Meeting. Read more...
