Former VBA Lead Lobbyist William G. Thomas Dies

VBA Life Member, law firm co-founder and longtime Reed Smith LLP partner William G. "Bill" Thomas died Jan. 23 at age 80.

A preeminent land-use attorney, he joined the VBA in 1967. Early in the VBA's relationship with Reed Smith, he served as the association's lead lobbyist.

A memorial service is scheduled for 2 p.m. Feb. 19 at St. Paul's Episcopal Church, 228 S. Pitt St., in Alexandria.

He was a former chair of the Virginia Democratic Party and a close adviser to Govs. Charles S. Robb and Gerald L. Baliles. His practice frequently involved representing clients before the Virginia General Assembly and state governmental agencies.

His obituary lists him as a founding partner of Thomas, Kent, Haddock, & Sewell in 1970. Over the years it evolved to the Hazel & Thomas law firm, which combined with Reed Smith in 1999. Mr. Thomas retired from Reed Smith in 2018.

He was a 1963 graduate of the University of Richmond School of Law.

Survivors include his widow, Suzanne Foster Thomas; two sons, William G. Thomas III and Alexander Young Thomas; and a daughter, Margaret Campbell Thomas Konkel.
