The Virginia Bar Association and seven other bar groups sent a letter to the Virginia State Bar in support of including elimination of bias training in the required two-hour annual minimum for ethics or professionalism education.

The proposal the bar group support originally was made by VSB Diversity Conference earlier this year.

"We believe that if we can better understand ourselves, and how our backgrounds and experiences shape the way we see, hear and treat others, we can improve both our civil and criminal justice systems," the letter reads. "That is why it is essential that we increase the availability of elimination of bias training and encourage more lawyers and judges to participate in these trainings by making elimination of bias an approved MCLE topic."

In addition to the VBA, these bar groups signed the letter: Old Dominion Bar Association, Northern Virginia Black Attorneys Association, Virginia Women Attorneys Association, Virginia Trial Lawyers Association, Virginia Association of Defense Attorneys, Hispanic Bar Association of Virginia and Asian Pacific American Bar Association of Virginia.
