VBA Capital Defense Workshop Receives $35,000 Grant

The Virginia Law Foundation, has it has for years, provided a grant for the 2020 Capital Defense Workshop, which will be the 28th annual event.

The workshop, sponsored by the Criminal Law Section of the VBA and funded by grants from the foundation, is designed for criminal defense attorneys willing to accept appointment in capital cases. This year's event will be all virtual and held Nov. 19 and 20.

Each year at the workshop, up to 250 lawyers receive the training to help them meet standards set by the Supreme Court of Virginia and the Virginia Indigent Defense Commission for the defense of capital cases in the commonwealth.

The goals of the workshop are to maintain and increase the level of qualified lawyers certified to accepts capital cases, provide attendees additional insight regarding national developments in death penalty litigation and enhance participants' overall skills and productivity as representatives of capital defendants.

Financial support from the Virginia Law Foundation allows the workshop to be presented with a nominal charge to registrants.

VLF grants help fund a variety of projects and organizations.
