Lawmakers Provide Funding for 396 Judges

The budget that Virginia lawmakers approved June 12 includes funding for 396 judges. That appropriation means Virginia will be able to add 36 judges to the current funding level for 360. Since 2010, the VBA has been a vocal proponent of fully funding judgeships. That was the year the General Assembly froze the automatic filling of judicial vacancies. We applaud legislators for recognizing the dire need for more judges – recommended in the Virginia Judicial Workload Assessment Report — especially given recent revenue figures. However, we also note that before the 2010 freeze in funding, Virginia had 402 authorized judgeships.
