Affiliated Bar Program

The Virginia Bar Association has a rich history and offers an unparalleled value and experience to its members. Since 2018, The Virginia Bar Association has offered an opportunity of affiliation to local and specialty bars. We hope the reciprocal benefits of affiliation will strengthen legal networks throughout the commonwealth.

Once certified for the year (see form below), the affiliated bars' members can access these benefits:

  • Discounted rates to attend live VBA CLEs
  • Use of VBA on Main, the member center in Richmond
  • Access to the VBA's legislative agenda for the improvement of laws in Virginia

Continuing Legal Education (CLE)

The VBA has 20 substantive sections made up of some of the commonwealth's leading practitioners in those areas. Many sections present "can't miss" CLE programs throughout the year. The ability to attend these programs at the VBA member rate provides a great benefit to the affiliated bars' members. See the VBA events calendar. Affiliated bar members can subscribe to express their interest to receive notifications of seminars they wish to attend.

Legislative Reform

Virginia State Capitol, home of the General AssemblySince its formation, The Virginia Bar Association has consistently worked to achieve landmark improvements to the administration of justice and the legal profession in Virginia. For example, the VBA has lobbied successfully for the General Assembly's filling and funding of judicial vacancies. Its substantive sections create a yearly legislative agenda that bubbles up through the membership. Any member can submit proposed legislation or legislative changes to one of the VBA's sections for VBA Board consideration. Affiliated local or specialty bars can propose legislation to the association to review for the VBA legislative agenda. Lawyers from the substantive sections and interested bars are heavily involved in the lobbying efforts. A recent example of the work by VBA members was the successful passage of a “fix” for the Thorson privity issue led by the Wills, Trusts & Estates Section.
