Special Committee

At the request of Chief Justice Donald W. Lemons of the Supreme Court of Virginia, the Joint ADR Committee Council appointed a Special Committee to Study Appellate Mediation in Virginia that included appellate litigation representatives from the VBA, judicial representatives from appellate courts and others. The Special Committee issued a report in April with several recommendations. Its final Report of the Special Committee to Study Appellate Mediation preceded action by the Supreme Court of Virginia and the Court of Appeals of Virginia to run pilot programs for mediation in those courts for two years, beginning Jan. 1, 2019. The committee's recommendation for a new level of certification for appellate mediators during the pilot projects will be presented to the Judicial Council for adoption later in 2018.
