Strengthen Justice Through Law Reform
Share |

One way to get involved in the VBA is to suggest improvements to Virginia law that benefit the public and strengthen the administration of justice. In 2020, the VBA’s legislative agenda consists of 13 bills that bubbled up from the membership, sections and affiliated groups. In 2019, all 12 bills supported by the VBA were signed into law by the governor.

Learn more about the process and how you can propose legislation or get active on the Advocacy page of the VBA website or from your VBA section council. More than 100 VBA members assist by monitoring emails of prefiled bills ahead of the start of the session and others make themselves available to provide testimony to lawmakers.

During the General Assembly session, a fully active page on the VBA website follows the progress of VBA-endorsed legislation, with updates three times a week. Shortly after the session, all VBA section members receive legislative summaries of passed and failed legislation in the legal specialty of that section.

Ahead of the session, the VBA holds Legislative Day, which occurs next on Sept. 24, 2020. This is where sections and affiliated groups present proposed bills for VBA Board of Governors consideration in the 2021 agenda. Look on the Advocacy page to see how you can take part in improving the law by proposing legislation.
