Engaged VBA members join one or more of the association’s 20 substantive law sections to help stay current in their fields of expertise. With one exception (the Joint Alternative Dispute Resolution Committee), sections are open only to VBA members.

The largest sections, Civil Litigation and Business Law, include several hundred practitioners. Close behind are Real Estate; Wills, Trusts & Estates; and Labor and Employment Law.

To advance initiatives, every section is led by a volunteer council with working committees, such as legislation, continuing legal education, membership and communications. Some may be looking for interested new members to get involved right now! Section members should contact the section chair to ask about opportunities.

Why join a section?

In addition to staying current in your field, section members often qualify for discounts on MCLE presentations by the section. Most sections organize social events where you can build your network. They also suggest legislative changes for the VBA lobbying agenda.

Also, shortly after each General Assembly session, every section member receives a summary of passed and failed legislation of particular interest in that field of law. New section members will find this year’s summary, when available, by signing in, selecting Groups (under My Profile or Community) and the section(s) of which you are a member. Would your practice and clients benefit from you knowing the pertinent legislative changes ahead of their effective date?

You can add sections at any time to your current VBA membership. Dues are $25 per section for the calendar year.
