Find a Lawyer

Several referral services can direct you to a lawyer who fits your needs. Your match may be just one a phone call away. State your legal problem and you can be given the name of an attorney in that area of the law right in your community. Referral services charge a small fee that covers your initial consultation with the lawyer.

The Virginia Bar Association does not offer attorney referrals. There are, however, a number of referral services in the state.

Lawyer Referral Services

Free legal services on non-criminal matters (for income-eligible individuals)

Seeking a referral because of a previous unsatisfactory relationship with an attorney? You have the right to request an inquiry into the conduct of a lawyer if sincere efforts to solve a problem cannot resolve them. Inquiries should be sent to the Virginia State Bar, the state agency that disciplines lawyers.

Representing yourself?

As a public service, the Virginia Judicial System has created a website for court self-help. It provides neutral legal information in areas commonly sought by self-represented litigants. Examples include traffic tickets, divorce, and landlord and tenant issues. The Court Self-Help Website also includes glossaries of legal terms and various forms. See the Virginia Judicial System Court Self-Help Website.

Veterans Initiative

The Virginia Bar Association does not have an attorney referral service, but it does assist servicemen and women in need of legal services. The VBA Veterans Issues Task Force is committed to helping Virginia service members who are getting ready to deploy, or are returning from a deployment, find an attorney who will assist them or their family with their legal services needs on a pro bono or reduced fee basis.

Fee Disputes
