Referrals & Complaints

Find a Lawyer

Several referral services can direct you to a lawyer who fits your needs. Your match may be just one a phone call away. State your legal problem and you can be given the name of an attorney in that area of the law right in your community. Referral services charge a small fee that covers your initial consultation with the lawyer.

The Virginia Bar Association does not offer attorney referrals. There are, however, a number of referral services in the state.

Seeking a referral because of a previous unsatisfactory relationship with an attorney? You have the right to request an inquiry into the conduct of a lawyer if sincere efforts to solve a problem cannot resolve them. Inquiries should be sent to the Virginia State Bar, the state agency that disciplines lawyers.

Representing yourself?

As a public service, the Virginia Judicial System has created a website for court self-help. It provides neutral legal information in areas commonly sought by self-represented litigants. Examples include traffic tickets, divorce, and landlord and tenant issues. The Court Self-Help Website also includes glossaries of legal terms and various forms. See the Virginia Judicial System Court Self-Help Website.

Report a Complaint

The Virginia Bar Association does not license Virginia attorneys. Likewise, we do not investigate complaints against them.

The organization that licenses Virginia attorneys is the Virginia State Bar. Complaints also are handled by the Virginia State Bar. Reach the Virginia State Bar by calling 804-775-0500, by mail at 1111 E. Main St., Suite 700, Richmond, VA 23219, or online at vsb.org. Find a form and more details about inquiries into lawyer conduct on the VSB website.

Fee Disputes

Have a concern about fees you paid your lawyer? The Virginia State Bar offers a public service program of volunteer attorneys to review disputes regarding payments. Learn more about the VSB program to resolve fee disputes.
