F. Claiborne “Jay” Johnston Jr., who served as president of The Virginia Bar Association in 1990, died March 31 in Raleigh, North Carolina. He was 82.

Mr. Johnston was a lifelong resident of Richmond and practiced his entire career with Mays & Valentine and its successor, Troutman Sanders, now Troutman Pepper Locke LLP. His practice was primarily in the field of business law, with an emphasis on corporate and securities law and financial institution regulation.

He chaired the VBA Business Law Section and served as a co-chairman of the VBA/VSB Joint Committee to study the revision of the Virginia Stock Corporation Act in 1984-85. He was elected to the Executive Committee, the predecessor of today’s Board of Governors, in 1986, and went on the leadership ladder two years later.

He was a fellow of both the Virginia Law Foundation and the American Bar Foundation, and a life member of the American Law Institute. He served as the VBA’s representative in the House of Delegates of the American Bar Association from 1992 to 1998.

Mr. Johnston earned his undergraduate degree from Princeton University; he joined the firm after graduating from the University of Virginia law school in 1967. He took senior partner status in 2009.

Mr. Johnston served in the U.S. Coast Guard Reserve from 1967-1973.

He served on a number of boards, including those of the Eskimo Pie Corp., the Westminster-Canterbury Corp., Westminster-Canterbury Foundation and Westminster Presbyterian Homes Inc.

Mr. Johnston also was a longtime member of the board of directors and president of the Historic Polegreen Church Foundation. He was a past director of the Valentine Museum and a former member and past chair of the board of the Library of Virginia (formerly Virginia State Library and Archives).

A graveside service will be held at Hollywood Cemetery April 29.
