Richard E. Garriott Jr., who served as VBA president in 2019, will receive the Family Law Service Award next month at a family law seminar in greater Richmond.
The honor is given by the Virginia State Bar Family Law Section. It recognizes someone who has consistently "provided valuable services in advancing family, domestic relations or juvenile law in Virginia."
Garriott, a founder of the Garriott | Maurer, PLLC, law firm in Virginia Beach, was nominated for the honor by eight attorneys from different firms who coordinated their proposal, according to an announcement on theĀ VSB website. The nomination mentioned Garriott's "passion, energy and commitment" as well as his leadership in the past of the Virginia Family Law Coalition, an entity the VBA works with on lobbying, and his involvement in front of and beside lawmakers "to help ensure that the rights of parents and children are protected by the laws of Virginia."
Garriott is a fellow of the Virginia Law Foundation and the American Bar Foundation, as well as a Life Fellow of the American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers.
He is a member of the VBA Domestic Relations Section and represents the VBA in the ABA House of Delegates.
