Jasmine Yoon, who was born in South Korea and moved to the United States when she was 14, will be the first Asian American federal judge in Virginia. The Senate confirmed her appointment as U.S. district judge for the Western District of Virginia on March 12.

According to Bloomberg Law, Yoon is vice president of corporate integrity, ethics and investigations at Capital One Financial Corp.

She formerly served as interim university counsel and associate university counsel at the University of Virginia, her undergraduate and law school alma mater, and as assistant U.S. attorney for the Eastern District of Virginia.

Virginia's U.S. Sens. Mark R. Warner and Tim Kaine recommended Yoon for the post. President Biden nominated her in January.

Yoon will join the bench when Chief Judge Michael F. Urbanski assumes senior status in July.
