Special Committee
At the request of Chief Justice Donald W. Lemons of the Supreme Court of Virginia, the Joint ADR Committee Council appointed a Special Committee to Study Appellate Mediation in Virginia that included appellate litigation representatives from the VBA, judicial representatives from appellate courts and others. The Special Committee issued a report in April with several recommendations. Its final Report of the Special Committee to Study Appellate Mediation preceded action by the Supreme Court of Virginia and the Court of Appeals of Virginia to run pilot programs for mediation in those courts for two years, beginning Jan. 1, 2019. The committee's recommendation for a new level of certification for appellate mediators has been adopted by the Judicial Council. For information on how to become certified at this level, see the certification requirements page on the court's website.
A new report was issued in October 2021 as an addendum to the earlier report. Read the new Report of the Special Committee.
